Idea Cellular, India’s 3rd largest telecom operator has the topped subscriber addition charts for the month of August. It added 1.73 million new subscribers taking its total user base to a cool 141.84 million at the end of August.
According to a report by COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India), India’s leading telco – Bharti Airtel stood at #3 for adding new subscribers and gained 0.77 million new users. Vodafone came out to be the second favorite of new cellular users as it gained 1.23 million mobile phone users. The total user base of Airtel and Vodafone at the end of the month stood at 210.53 million and 172.49 million respectively.
The report also reveals that India’s GSM subscribers base witnessed a growth of 0.74% in July with a total of 5.54 million new customers opting for the GSM services. The total number of mobile phone users in the country stood at 749.96 millions.
While things are looking good for Idea and Vodafone, Airtel which is currently the #1 cellular operator in the country needs to do introduce something attractive to lure new users, and focus less energy on introducing hikes in its 2G data plans.
