Datawind, the maker of the immensely popular Aakash tablet, is now all set to launch affordable entry-level Android smartphone carrying a price tag of Rs. 2,000. The phone will have a 3.5 inch touchscreen display and will come bundled with free internet for the lifetime.
We all know that lifetime means a few years for the electronic devices and is generally 2-3 years.
But still, one cannot just ignore the fact that they are offering free internet for the lifetime of the gadget.
Datawind is launching this Rs. 2,000 Android smartphone along with few other devices before Diwali so that it could double its sales by the end of the current calendar year. The company currently has 5 tablets and 3 smartphones in its portfolio and is selling about 40,000 to 50,000 devices per month.
Datawind is in talks with 3 telecom operators for providing free internet data but didn’t spill more beans about the yet to be finalized deal.
Rupinder Singh, Executive Vice President at Datawind said that the company has aggressive plans for manufacturing gadgets in India, but didn’t mention any roadmap for the same.
Datawind really knows how to make affordable devices. The best example is the Aakash tablet which was sold for just Rs. 2,276 in 2011.
This Rs. 2,000 Android smartphone can be an instant hit in the highly competitive Indian market if its done right. Who would not want free internet access on a smartphone for a lifetime? Well, only the time will tell about its success but we are really hoping that it would crush its competitors like Intex Cloud FX as if they were nothing.
