Jio took the world by storm when it announced unlimited and free voice calling for life for its 4G mobile subscribers. Though Jio services are still not up to the mark partly due to the anti-competitive moves of other telcos, and partly due to its network infrastructure, the company has managed to make it to news almost on a daily basis.

While plans to counter Jio from other leading telcos are still awaited BSNL was the first to strike back.

BSNL has countered Jio’s unlimited voice plans by announcing its own version of unlimited voice offering. The main USP of these plans would be its universal compatibility.

Unlike Jio, BSNL also has 2G and 3G services which would also support free voice calling. This would BSNL gain an edge over Jio as many mobile subscribers in India are still using 2G and 3G phones and wouldn’t upgrade to 4G in near future. So an obvious choice for these users would be to shift to BSNL rather than to buy a 4G phone.

According to some reports, BSNL is also planning to offer cheaper data than Jio which would be at least Rs. 2-4 cheaper than Jio’s offering.

BSNL also plans to launch an entry-level plan at a more competitive price than Jio’s Rs. 149 plan.

“We are closely observing the market as well as Jio’s performance. We will also come up with lifetime free-voice plans from the new year as part of fresh offerings,” said Anupam Shrivastava, BSNL CMD.

The Catch

These free voice plans would be available only to those subscribers who have a BSNL broadband connection at home.

“The idea is to use the home broadband to route outgoing mobile calls through the landline network. We estimate that a large amount of time is spent at home, and so here we can ride on our wire-line operations,” Shrivastava added.

However, BSNL has also announced that the users would still be able to use free calling facility outside their home. The most obvious way seems to route calls through the 2G and 3G network. We don’t know how that would work but we’ll let you know as soon as more information is available about it.

If you are excited about these unlimited voice plans from BSNL then you would have to wait till January 2017 as BSNL would be launching fresh plans only as a part of New Year’s offerings.
