In a move to comply with the latest guidelines issued by TRAI regarding differential pricing and net neutrality, Airtel has withdrew its WhatsApp only internet plans for 2G and 3G users.
Airtel launched these plans over two years ago. These plans started from Rs. 36 per month and offered one month of free WhatsApp usage.
Recently, Telecom also did the same and withdrew its WhatsApp only data plans for complying with the new guidelines.
All of this is being done thanks to the new rules made by TRAI in regards to discriminatory pricing and speed for various services that can be accessed over the internet. This will ensure that no telecom operator can alter the internet and offer customized packages to the customer for maximizing their revenue. TRAI has also announced that any operator violating these guidelines will be fined Rs. 50,000 day which will be capped to Rs. 50,00,000.
These net neutrality rules effectively ends all those specific internet packs for accessing a particular service like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
