Have you ever felt the need to use your data card SIM into your iPhone, or to a tablet device? We all have experienced a similar thing at some point of time. We can covert neither a mini-SIM (normal SIM) to a nano-SIM (used in iPhones) nor a nano-SIM to micro-SIM (used in most recent smartphones) on our own. The solution to all of this is the Smart SIM.

Smart SIM would make these obsolete

A smart SIM can be considered as a universal SIM since it can be adjusted to be used in all of your devices. Sounds interesting?

A smart SIM is a nano-SIM card whose size can be adjusted with the use of 2 separate jackets.

Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel, and Tata Teleservices are among the first operators in the country to start offering the new Smart SIM cards. Aircel will soon follow their suit and launch the new kind of SIM in major 3G markets.

Aircel’s CMO, Anupam Vasudev says, “The SIM will be priced at approximately Rs 125 and will have pre-bundled voice and data combo as per a smartphone user’s consumption.”

Airtel had launched the Smart SIM in Andra Pradesh first before rolling it out across other circles. Both Airtel and Idea charge an additional Rs. 25 for the Smart SIM while Tata Teleservices is charging Rs. 20 for the new SIM.

Airtel in some circles offers this SIM bundled with Rs. 100 of talktime and 1GB 3G internet data @ Rs. 299. This data is reduced to 600 MB for ICR (intra-circle roaming agreement) regions.

Gurinder Singh Sandhu, head of marketing at Tata Teleservices said that the surge in smartphones penetration has led to the increasing demand for the Smart SIM.

This new Smart SIM will not only let consumers swipe SIM across devices seamlessly, but will also help reduce the carbon footprint and thus can be termed as eco-friendly.
