A few days back we had covered various news posts about all major telecom operators in India increasing the 2G data plans. Now, they’ve almost doubled the price for 1GB of 2G data.

Almost all telcos had been offering 1GB 2G data for Rs. 150 approximately. Now, Airtel and Vodafone have cut the amount of data allowance under packs costing close to Rs. 150 to ~500 MB only!

Vodafone & Airtel are currently offering 1GB 2G data having a validity of 28 days for Rs. 175(+- 2) across all major circles.

This is the second hike in data tariff this year and this what an Airtel official had to say about it:

“We did this sometime back in a few circles. Other telcos like Vodafone have also followed suit.”

It looks like these telcos are getting united against the customers and charging them too much for 2G data. I am not concerned too much about the pricing, but the fact that they caps our transfer speeds bugs me to the core. 2G internet is very well capable of speeds to the order of 30KBps and more, but we don’t even get 16KBps consistently!

A TRAI official said, “Cash-strapped telcos have adopted a strategy to propel first-time smartphone users to use 3G and push their existing 2G data users to experience faster speed on 3G. Clearly, the move is to pull out all the stops to cover costs and improve margins.”

Telecom operators shouldn’t be considered bad for introducing hikes in 2G data plans since they have not been able to grow their 3G subscribers base by a significant amount. The number of smartphone users have been estimated to have grown by 205% in the year, whereas the growth in 3G subscribers base is even less than 8%.
Well, we would advise you to expect such hikes in 2G data packs from even more telecom operators. So, you are better off shifting to 3G or even 4G when Reliance Jio launches it, rather than paying too much for super slow 2G data.
