According to the latest data on TRAI’s MySpeed portal, Jio has now taken the lead in providing the fastest 4G data speed in the country. Jio now has an average download data speed of 8.56 Mbps throughout the nation. On the other hand, Airtel provides an average 4G data speed of 8.28 Mbps, Vodafone 4G has an average speed of 7.31 Mbps, while Idea 4G is rated to provide an average speed of 6.72 Mbps across the country. Reliance Communications which shares its network infrastructure with Reliance Jio offers just 5.79 Mbps 4G data speed.
Vodafone Offers The Highest 4G Upload Speed
While Vodafone is far behind Jio in terms of 4G download speed, it holds the first position in providing the fastest 4G upload speed averaging at 3.96 Mbps across the country. Idea and Airtel trail Vodafone in terms of 4G upload speed by offering 3.87 Mbps and 3.3 Mbps respectively. Jio’s average 4G upload speed stand at 2.5 Mbps which is much ahead of Reliance Communications’ average 4G upload speed of just 1.98 Mbps.
Jio Has Better Signal Strength Than Airtel
In terms of pan-India coverage, Jio has an average signal strength of -95.47 dBm as compared to Airtel’s -96.80 dBm. It is worth noting that Vodafone takes the lead (-92.93 dBm) in terms of 4G signal strength, whereas Idea offers an average strength of -93.32 across the country, both these telcos don’t have pan-India coverage.
Airtel Is The Fastest 3G Operator
Airtel is the market leader when it comes to 3G data speed (download and upload). It offers an average of 3.8 Mbps across the country, as compared to 3.15 Mbps of Vodafone and 2.74 Mbps of Idea.
In terms of 3G upload speed, we again have the same order with Airtel at the top offering 1.25 Mbps, Vodafone at 1.14 Mbps and Idea at 1.06 Mbps.
If you are thinking whether the speed close to 8 Mbps can be qualified as 4G speeds, then you’re on the right track. 4G network are designed to provide much faster speed than the existing 3G networks. But it is not going to happen in India soon. If you remember, earlier Jio 4G speed were upwards of 20 Mbps but as the subscriber count kept on increasing the data speed started deteriorating. Hopefully Jio 4G speed would see some improvement post the implementation of 1 GB daily FUP limit under the ‘Happy New Year’ offer valid from 1 January 2017. However Jio subscriber base is still growing so we don’t expect to see significant improvement in data speed using this strategy unless the telecom operator optimises its network.
